Mobile DJ – What do they do? It sounds a simple question doesn’t it? However, there is and should be more to just pressing a button & making the occasional announcement. They are far more than just a juke box, they are the key to the success of your party.
In this article I cover the range of tasks of what a professional DJ should offer and why it’s critical to consider these qualities for your event.
Communication
One of a mobile DJs finest skills should be their ability to communicate with you and your guests.
This from the moment you make initial contact all the way through to when they complete their gig. This can and often is a considerable length of time. Many wedding for example are booked up to 3 years in advance, so communication throughout this period is important.
This is why I favour a free meeting which is particularly popular with wedding couples so that I can get to know them build a rapport with the client. It’s also useful to discuss music, lighting and any other useful details.
The other key thing is that as a mobile DJ, he/she will be responsible for communicating with you, your guests and key stakeholders throughout the event ensuring that everything runs smoothly. They therefore must be approachable.
Microphone Technique
A professional wedding & party DJ will know what to say on the microphone and when to say it.
Making important announcements, being clearly heard and knowing when to make them is critically important at any function.
However, the last thing most clients want to hear is a muffled voice or possibly someone who talks non-stop all evening rather than just getting on with it and playing great music!
Music
Every event’s success will be judged upon whether everyone had a great time. Usually that means dancing the night away to their favourite tunes.
Key questions to consider are:
- Will your prospective DJ play your playlist?
- Will your DJ listen to what you want to hear?
- Will they accept your guests/friend’s requests?
- Will they be experienced enough to know their genres of music?
- Will they be flexible and adaptable ensuring that the dance floor remains full?
- Will they ensure that all song lyrics are non-explicit (no swearing).
Lighting
Mobile DJ – what the best DJs do – ensure that the disco lighting to appropriate for each event. This means ensuring that your guests are not being blinded by lights constantly in their faces, but the lighting remain focused on the dance floor with the correct levels of brightness.
Sound Levels
Vitally important is knowing the correct volume levels so that dancers can have a great time, but equally other guests can comfortably talk to each other without shouting! An experienced DJ will know exactly how to pitch the sound levels and will happily work with you and the venue.
Appearance
Most professional DJs will dress appropriately for each event. This is important for weddings and corporate events where the DJ needs to be smart. Most clients will not want to see a scruffy DJ turn up in jeans and old trainers for their event.
